はじめに
イバン・イリッチはLimits to medicineの中でcounterproductivityという言葉を用いた。これはcounterとproductivityを彼が組み合わせた造語であると考えるが、彼はこの言葉で、体制が行き過ぎると、本来とは反対の予期せぬ結果をもたらす、という思想を表現した。イリッチのエッセイは抽象性が高く、難解であるとされる。このcounterproductivityという言葉も、日本語に相応しい訳語が見つからない。しかし全体を通読すれば彼がこの言葉に込めた意味、意図は理解できる。
この試論では彼が思想的に凝縮したcounterproductivityを、数理的モデルとシミュレーション描画で理解しようとする試みである。以下エッセイの全文PDFを添付する。
Ivan Illich used the term “counterproductivity” in The Limits to Medicine. I believe this is a neologism he coined by combining “counter” and “productivity”; through this term, he expressed the idea that when a system goes too far, it produces unintended results that run counter to its original intent. Illich’s essays are often regarded as highly abstract and difficult to understand. Even for the term “counterproductivity,” there is no widely accepted Japanese translation. However, by reading the text in its entirety, one can grasp the meaning and intent he imbued in this word.
This essay is an attempt to understand the concept of “counterproductivity” — which Illich developed into a coherent philosophy — through mathematical models and simulation diagrams. The full text of the essay is attached below as a PDF.
